Six Dimensions
Traction
Run-rate revenue went from roughly $9B at the end of 2025 to $14B in February, past $30B in April, and to $47B by the Series H announcement on May 28[ANT-TRC-01] — the fastest documented revenue scaling in the history of enterprise software.
Composition: roughly 40% of enterprise LLM spend against OpenAI's 27%, and roughly 54% of enterprise coding-model spend, a segment where Anthropic gained twelve points in six months. Eight of the Fortune 10 are customers. More than 300,000 businesses buy from Anthropic and more than 1,000 accounts spend over $1M a year, up from 500 in February.
Breadth is the limitation rather than depth. Consumer presence is real but secondary — Claude web visits grew roughly 855% year over year to about 950M a month, third place and roughly 8–9% of gen-AI web traffic. The magnitude is very strong; it sits on fewer surfaces than OpenAI's.
Traction Quality
The question: if the capital and the discounting stopped tomorrow, how much of this would remain?
Compounding share — most of it. Enterprise API spend embedded in procurement, security review and production workflows does not churn on a competitor's release. Coding share rose from 42% to 54%[ANT-TQ-02] in six months during a price war: share gained while prices were falling is the strongest available evidence of demand that is not being rented. Accounts above $1M doubled from 500 to more than 1,000 in three months, which means the installed base is expanding itself.
The qualification is intermediation, not durability. A large share of the best revenue has historically arrived through Cursor and GitHub Copilot — Cursor alone estimated at 40–50% at one point[ANT-TQ-04]. Anthropic owns the demand but not always the customer relationship. Cursor is building its own models; GitHub sits inside Microsoft, OpenAI's principal partner. That is compounding demand attached to rented distribution.
Strong rather than Very strong for that reason: quality per unit is the best in the sector, on a narrow and partly intermediated base. Direct-to-user pull that Anthropic controls end to end is a small share of the total.
Friction
Financial — real but improving, which is rare in this sector. Gross margin moved from roughly −94% in 2024 to about 60% in 2026, driven by inference efficiency rather than price increases. Cash burn is falling in absolute terms: about $5.6B in 2025 against a materially lower 2026 target, with cash-flow breakeven aimed at 2028. Reporting indicates GAAP operating profit was achieved on a quarterly basis in 2026.
Competitive — the primary threat, and it is pricing. Google's Gemini Flash undercuts on cost for structural reasons Anthropic cannot replicate at will, because Google owns its silicon end to end. OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Luna pricing by up to 80%. Equivalent intelligence has fallen 90%+ in cost over two years. Mid-tier models are commoditising; frontier models are the only remaining high-margin product, and the frontier is contested every few months.
Concentration — the moat and the exposure are the same fact. Cursor at one point accounted for an estimated 40–50% of revenue; GitHub Copilot volume sits inside Microsoft. Both can switch models with comparatively little friction. Concentration has fallen as the base has grown, but the revenue mix remains coding-heavy.
Legal — largely converted from open-ended to bounded. Final approval of the $1.5B Bartz settlement came in July 2026[ANT-LEG-01] — the largest known US copyright settlement, and a very large cheque, but it retired a theoretical exposure that ran into the hundreds of billions. UMG and Concord litigation expanded in early 2026 to roughly 20,000 works seeking about $3B and remains unresolved.
Political — new and unusually direct. The Defense Secretary reportedly threatened to pull a ~$200M contract[ANT-POL-01] and blacklist Anthropic from federal work over its refusal to permit AI-controlled weapons and mass domestic surveillance. Anthropic put $20M into Public First Action and formed AnthroPAC; a $27M proxy fight with OpenAI in a single Manhattan congressional race ended with the winner rejecting both.
Friction Quality
Most of Anthropic's friction is being metabolised well. The copyright settlement forced data-provenance discipline and converted an existential tail risk into a paid, bounded cost — the textbook case of friction producing durable capability. The price war is producing inference efficiency rather than margin surrender; the 154-point gross-margin swing came from engineering, not pricing. The Pentagon standoff clarified where the company's limits actually are, and it held two of them at real commercial cost. That is friction converting into institutional identity.
The destructive exception is the stopping rule. A commitment to halt that becomes contingent on competitive position is not a stopping rule; it is an intention. Anthropic built its credibility on having a mechanism that could halt the company against its own commercial interest, then weakened that mechanism precisely when commercial interest intensified. This produces no learning and no capability — it removes a constraint that was itself the product.
The structural pattern is the same one flagged as OpenAI's worst signal, arriving by a different route. OpenAI lost its safety sensors through attrition. Anthropic kept its people and moved the threshold. Different mechanism, same effect on the system's ability to stop itself.
Economic Locus
What share of forward motion the business generates itself, and which way that share is moving.
Internal. This is the strongest engine reading in frontier AI. Gross margin moved from roughly −94% to about 60% driven by inference efficiency — margin earned by engineering rather than by price is the purest form of internal engine. Absolute cash burn fell year over year while revenue grew more than fivefold. Reporting indicates quarterly GAAP operating profit was reached. Accounts above $1M doubled in three months, meaning the installed base itself generates growth.
External. Real and worth naming. $95B raised across two rounds this year. Distribution runs partly through third parties. Compute sits entirely on partner infrastructure — and Google is simultaneously a major investor and a major supplier, a circularity that flatters the apparent independence of the arrangement.
Direction of travel is the point: every internal measure improved through a price war. That is an engine forming, not fuel being consumed.

Claim Integrity
How well stated reality tracks measured reality — and which direction the corrections travel.
Financial claim discipline is the best in the sector. Run-rate milestones are published with dates and reconciled in funding disclosures. Most tellingly, Anthropic revised its forward gross-margin projection downward during a period of accelerating revenue. Corrections that travel against interest are the strongest possible evidence on this dimension, and they are rare.
Non-financial claim integrity is where this scores Mixed. In February the company revised its Responsible Scaling Policy[ANT-CI-02], removing the commitment to halt model development if capabilities outpace safeguards and replacing it with a condition tied to holding a significant lead over competitors. The revision came during the Pentagon dispute and an intensifying capability race.
This is not a false statement, and it was disclosed rather than discovered — which is why it scores Mixed rather than Strained. But it is a change to the single claim that most differentiates the company, made under pressure, in the direction that loosens it. Restraint is now conditional on competitive standing rather than on absolute capability thresholds. Everything Anthropic says about its own limits should be read with that conditional attached, and there is little evidence the market has repriced it.
Traction: Very strong − Friction: Moderate
Net balance: Strongly positive, and materially wider than OpenAI's.
The difference is not that Anthropic grows faster — both are growing extraordinarily. It is that Anthropic's growth is increasingly paying for itself.

DURABILITY VERDICT
Compounding
Growth is converting into improving unit economics rather than consuming them. Margin is rising, burn is falling in absolute terms, and the business reached quarterly operating profit while still growing at triple digits. That is a self-sustaining engine forming in real time. The qualification is narrowness: it compounds on a concentrated base, in the segment where price is falling fastest.
How the verdict is derived
With Traction Quality and Economic Locus scored explicitly, the durability verdict is computed from the dimensions rather than asserted alongside them. The rules are evaluated terminal-first — Collapsing, then Fragmenting, then Compounding, then Coasting — and the first condition met is the verdict. They are set out below in constructive order for readability; the evaluation order governs.

Why Compounding rather than Coasting
Coasting describes a company moving forward on momentum and injected capital. Anthropic raised $95B across two rounds this year, so capital is plainly abundant — but the operating trend does not depend on it. Gross margin rose from roughly −94% to about 60% without price increases; absolute burn declined year over year while revenue grew more than fivefold; quarterly GAAP operating profit was reached. Each of those would be a reasonable target for 2028. They arrived in 2026.
Why not a stronger verdict
Compounding is the top band, but this is Compounding with a named fragility. A large share of the revenue base sits in coding, a large share of coding revenue has historically flowed through a handful of intermediaries, and at least one of those is building its own models while another sits inside a competitor's parent. Add a price war in which the lowest-cost producer owns its own silicon, and the concentration risk and the margin risk are correlated rather than independent.
The non-financial risk is the one to watch
Anthropic's commercial position and its safety position are not separable. Enterprises choose Claude partly on trust; regulators engage Anthropic as a credible counterparty partly on its commitments; a meaningful share of the research talent joined for the mission. The February RSP revision touched all three at once, and it is the reason Claim Integrity scores Mixed rather than Strong. It has not visibly cost anything yet. It is the single input most likely to change this verdict.
What would move the verdict
Downward: gross-margin guidance cut again, visible senior safety attrition following the RSP change, a coding-segment share reversal, or an adverse outcome in the music-publisher litigation at Bartz scale. Upward is largely confirmation: sustained margin above 60% through the price war, revenue diversification below 50% coding, and an IPO that prices at or above $965B.

The margin improvement is the most load-bearing fact in this assessment. Revenue growth at this rate is impressive but not by itself informative — capital can buy it. A 154-point gross-margin swing achieved through inference efficiency while prices were falling cannot be bought. It is evidence of a technical and operational advantage that persists after the funding stops, and it is the primary reason this report reaches Compounding where OpenAI's reaches Coasting.
Enterprise share of this magnitude is unlikely to be a temporary lead. Reaching 40% of enterprise LLM spend against a first mover's 27%, and 54% of coding spend, reflects procurement decisions, security review, and workflow embedding — commitments that do not reverse on a single model release. The corollary is that the same stickiness will make it hard for Anthropic to take consumer share from ChatGPT.
The RSP revision should be read as a competitive disclosure, not a safety disclosure. The replacement condition is explicitly relative — it ties continued development to holding a lead over competitors. A company confident in its lead does not need that clause. Its presence is reasonable evidence that internal assessments of the capability gap are narrower than external positioning implies.
The Pentagon standoff is a costly signal, and costly signals are informative. Anthropic accepted a threatened contract loss and federal blacklisting rather than relax limits on AI-controlled weapons and domestic surveillance. Whatever the RSP revision says about the company's stopping rules, this says something real about its actual limits. The two facts should be held together rather than used to cancel each other.
Cross-vendor compute is a structural advantage that is currently underweighted. Running production workloads across TPUs, Trainium, and Nvidia gives Anthropic pricing leverage and supply resilience that single-stack competitors lack. In a market where compute cost is the binding constraint on margin, this is closer to a moat than most of what gets described as one.
FRAMEWORK INTERPRETATION
Anthropic is the clearest Compounding case in frontier AI, and the framework should say so without softening it. The forces pushing forward — enterprise share, margin trajectory, compute optionality, and a workforce that is growing rather than leaving — are stronger than the forces dragging back, and the gap is widening rather than narrowing. Traction is being converted into retained value, which is the specific thing the NSV framework asks about and the specific thing OpenAI is not yet doing.
The single destructive signal is the stopping rule. Every framework assessment tries to identify the friction that produces no learning. For OpenAI that is safety attrition. For Anthropic it is the February RSP revision — not because it caused harm, but because it removed the mechanism designed to detect and act on harm before it happens, and it did so under exactly the competitive pressure the mechanism was built to withstand. A commitment that binds only when it is convenient is not a constraint on the system; it is a description of the system's preferences.
The concentration risk deserves more weight than the market gives it. The coding franchise is simultaneously the moat and the exposure. It generates the margin, it anchors the enterprise position, and it routes through a small number of intermediaries with strong incentives to reduce their dependence. Diversification of the revenue mix is the most important operating metric to track over the next four quarters — more important, on this framework, than the growth rate.

About the two quality dimensions
Traction quality. Not all traction is equal. Some compounds — it creates switching costs, retained value and demand that survives without subsidy. Some is rented — bought with capital, price cuts, or someone else's distribution. Anthropic's is unusually high quality: it gained coding share while prices were falling, which is the hardest kind of demand to buy. The qualification is that a large part of it arrives through someone else's product, so the demand compounds while the distribution is rented.
Not all friction is bad. Some friction is the necessary cost of learning, adapting, and improving. What matters is whether friction produces learning or just produces waste.
Anthropic's friction is largely productive, and unusually so. The copyright settlement was expensive and it bought permanent data discipline plus a bounded liability. The price war is being answered with engineering rather than discounting. The Pentagon dispute cost revenue and produced a clear, public statement of where the company will not go. Political spending produced a bruising and inconclusive proxy fight, which is itself a lesson. In each case the friction left the company with something it did not have before.
The critical exception is the Responsible Scaling Policy revision. Removing the commitment to halt development when capability outpaces safeguards — and replacing it with a condition tied to competitive standing — is friction that produces nothing. It does not make the models better, the margins wider, or the organisation smarter. It relieves pressure by removing the mechanism that generated the pressure. A company that redefines the threshold at which it would stop has not become safer or faster. It has become harder to stop.
